Because in food I trust. In all forms and shapes.

Best coffee shops. Lyon

Best coffee shops. Lyon

I have always been a bit obsessed with finding a good coffee. Even before searching for good food, I will search for coffee and not because I cannot survive without it, I can, but because it is part of the experience a city offers. It can be good or bad and why have it bad if there is always a possibility to actually enjoy what one drinks?

I still remember how in 2015 we arrived in Lyon for the first time. And again, I was looking for a specialty coffee place, especially after a few visits to Paris, where the best you could get was a bucked or transparent drink hot as flames of hell (not that I have been there, thankfully) profiting only from a burnt tongue and minor heart attack later that day. And, yes, to our surprise, there were two places. La Boîte à Café and Puzzle Cafe. Next to the amazing scenery and very tasty restaurant meals, those coffee moments were the tastiest moments Lyon had to offer. And, to be frank, they still are, as I love nothing more than a very well-prepared cappuccino shared with a loved one, friend, or alone and the people in the café. You should not expect good roasted and properly prepared coffee places all over Lyon, not even in 2024, yet, there are a few that rescue the souls of those so desperate for a coffee that tastes like coffee should.

La Boîte à Café — my favourite is oat cappuccino, next to all other drinks that always come perfectly prepared.

Mokxa — everything is good here, even those drinks that might sound strange (special seasonal tastes), yet always are made to perfection.

Diploid — more of a brunch, breakfast, and lunch place, but also a place that serves very good coffee, no matter which one you choose.

Loutsa — roastery and coffee place, with a few shops around Lyon, it is great for all coffees (except oat cappuccino for me, as it lacks that creaminess I love).

Les Cafetiers — also, more of an eat-and-then-take-coffee place, although, as they serve very good coffee, roasted by Loutsa, I like to go there just for that.

Rakwé — although a bit on the dark side, interior-wise, their coffee has always been and still is made to enjoy every sip of it. They have several spots in Lyon.
